Step by step, Danny Thompson has maintained and expanded his family’s celebrated history in motor sports. He began his career in Motocross, progressing through the Formula Atlantic Series, Supervees, CRA Sprint Cars, and eventually in-door stadium trucks. Danny came to Bonneville for the first time in 1992, and became a record holder in multiple classes. He gained further salt flats notoriety in 2007 after building the world’s fastest Ford Mustang. In 2010, Danny began a ground up rebuild of the Challenger 2, a land speed streamliner originally constructed in 1968 by his father Mickey Thompson and a who’s who of So-Cal drag racers. In 2016, Danny used the completed vehicle to break the existing naturally aspirated streamliner record with a combined speed of 406.769mph. Knowing that the car had more potential, he continued trying to up the top speed, and in 2018 he drove the restored 50-year-old vehicle to a blistering two-way AA/FS record of 448.757mph, a mark that stands to this day.
