Gordon Maltby was introduced to Porsches in 1973 when he bought a 1969 911S. It would be followed by dozens of Porsches of all kinds over the years. Lacking the deep pockets needed to pay specialists, he learned engine building, bodywork, upholstery, and gained an insight into all the car systems. Two years of art school, then a few years working as a mechanic, and a few more in the printing business led to a job as art director for Classic Motorbooks. In 1990 he wrote “Porsche 356 and RS Spyders” at a time when there were few books on the 356. That variety of experiences was the perfect background for a new job as editor and publisher of Porsche 356 Registry magazine in 1992. Twenty-six years later he retired, having developed the magazine into the premier publication of old Porsches. During that time his company RPM Auto Books also published several Porsche titles about the 356, 911, and 912. Today Gordon shares his new book, commissioned by Motorbooks, “Porsche 356, 75th Anniversary” celebrating the first Porsche model and the company’s early history.

INSPIRATION
The focus between Reutter and Porsche was the emphasis in this book. Frank Young, head of the Porsche archives, was a great help with information.
CHALLENGES
Getting used to being on his own, Gordon was challenged by keeping the photo and word count to the required number by the publisher Motorbooks. Also getting the layout completed the way he wanted it to look was also a bit of a challenge.
SPECIAL VEHICLE
Porsche 997 Cabriolet that he owns today and some of the Mercedes Gordon has previously owned.
