Jack Atkinson had an amazing career and a key part of it was with Brumos Porsche. Between the dealerships and race team, Jack was with Brumos for 24 years, starting as a service manager at Brundage Motors Atlanta in 1955. He held many roles, but the one that fit him best was when he donned the Greek fisherman’s cap, the one he wore as team manager during Brumos’ glory years of endurance racing in the 1970s. He guided Brumos to 7 IMSA GT titles and 4 Trans-Am titles in the 70s with legendary wins at Daytona and Sebring. Innovative, adaptable, and unflappable, Jack developed his own racing philosophy. Even though today’s racing technology has replaced his detailed race observations and handwritten records, his time at tracks stands the test of time. Here’s to Jack, long may he ignore the competition! Jack will be a panelist at this year’s Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance along with yesterday’s guest Woody Woodard, tomorrow’s guest, Prescott Kelly, and past Cars Yeah guest Hurley Haywood.

INSPIRATION

Jack Elliot was a key mentor and he was Jack’s first boss when starting his career in the automotive business. Carroll Smith, the author of those iconic racing books, was another mentor who helped Jack compete in business. Those as well as Peter Gregg, Hurley Haywood, and Roger Penske all helped form and develop Jack’s successes.

CHALLENGES

When racing in 1969 Jack learned some lessons about successful fuel usage in a Porsche that kept supposedly running out of fuel before it should.

SPECIAL VEHICLE
