Miranda Seymour, celebrated as a biographer, novelist, memoir writer and critic, has been a visiting professor at Nottingham Trent University. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts as well as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow, and the author of the award-winning memoir, In My Father’s House. Her many acclaimed biographies include: A Ring of Conspirators, an innovative study of Henry James and his literary circle; Ottoline Morrell: Life on a Grand Scale; Robert Graves: Life on the Edge; Mary Shelley; In Byron’s Wake, The Bugatti Queen and I Used to Live Here Once: The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys. Today is a very exciting show for me as I have the opportunity to speak with, Miranda Seymour, the author of my favorite book, “The Bugatti Queen,” who writes the story of one of my favorite racers, Hellé Nice.

INSPIRATION

Hellé Nice taught Miranda courage, perseverance, and boldness. She inspired bravery and taught her to look forward with hope and don’t ever let the bastard get you down.

CHALLENGE

Miranda faced several challenges when writing her book. One was finding where Hellé Nice lived which lead to Miranda spending the night in a police cell, a story you must listen to. Another adventure Miranda got to experience was learning to drive a Bugatti!

SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE

At 18, Miranda went out with a boy who had an AC Cobra, a drive that lives with her forever. A second car story included a boyfriend whose stomach was like a cushion, a crash in her deux chevaux, and a funny ending. It’s a must listen!
