If you were fortunate enough to have great parents like I did, when you were a child, then they taught you the importance of finding your peer group. I remember the first time that little voice in my head said, “He’s not a good person to hang around with. He’s trouble.” And he was. You find out pretty quick who the right people are and who the wrong people are. And if you are wise, you’ll choose a peer group who share your goals, aspirations, dreams and viewpoints.
You are the culmination of the people you spend time with.
The great thing about choosing a strong peer group is that they will push you to improve and to be better. And they will expect the same push back from you. They will keep you honest to your promises and they will constantly raise your bar while boosting you up with their help and friendship.
Best of all, they will tell you the brutal truth.
I’ve learned that the car hobby is filled with very special people. They may not be in the same business, or have the same political viewpoints, or worship in the same house, but they walk in your shoes and they understand your passion and dreams. And of course…
They know which way to spin a wrench.
Hanging around people that are more successful, smarter, and stronger than you will apply positive and uplifting pressures in your life. Finding the right peer group and spending time with them on a regular schedule just might be an incredible boost to your career as well.
Or as we said in Mizzurah back in the 40s and 50s, “Lie down with dogs. Get up with fleas.”
Loved this posting–so true.
