Learning to Drive a Stick Shift

IMG_4889

Ease the clutch out while you apply a little gas… That’s it. Easy now, oops, whoa, oh my, look out!

Brake, brake, brake!

Funny how things we learn and do over and over become mindless actions. But wow how that first time it is such a challenge and such a rush.

Change is hard.

But it is good for the soul. It is absolutely necessary for the soul. It pushes the comfort zone and takes you beyond where you thought you could go. Without a fresh push in to unknown adventures we become stale, complacent, slow, and eventually unhappy.

Try something new every day.

Even if it’s a different kind of drink at your local coffee shop. Slip the clutch, apply a little gas, and take off in to the unknown. It is a good thing to do. As much as possible.

What are you going to do today that is different and new? Share the experience below and inspire another to do the same.

  1. I have taught several people to “drive a stick” over the last 30 some years. I like to start with the engine shut off and have the student practice easing the clutch from the floor, all the way out, starting with – one a thousand , hesitate a second, and two a thousand…. with the engine shut off. Then, start er up, and do the same thing at idle, no throttle on flat ground. Nice and easy on the clutch, easy on the instructor, easy on the student. Probably cost the clutch replacement people a few bucks. Oh well…
