Mark Halliar is the Publisher of Region Rides, a free monthly magazine that showcases the automobile, truck, and bike culture in Northwest Indiana. The area of Indiana where he lives is called the Region and it holds an extremely eclectic population due to its steel and oil industry. The car hobby in the Region is a melting pot where you’ll discover muscle cars, mini-trucks, bagged motorcycles, custom built choppers, modern sports cars including Camaros and Mustangs and Superbirds. Mark worked as a graphic designer for 18 years and then for a newspaper.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

Don’t sweat the petty things, and don’t pet the sweaty things.– George Carlin

CAREER & LIFE CHALLENGES

One of the largest challenges I faced was working, and doing the magazine on the side. It was sometimes hard to meet deadlines. In high school, I was a procrastinator, and I found myself pulling some all-nighters. I’ve learned to stay ahead of the curve, not to be lazy, and to work and plan ahead. Also, stay organized. You can’t do things on a whim, and hope something works out. You need to schedule things, and stay organized.

FIRST SPECIAL VEHICLE

My first special car was one that I bought 50/50 with my father. At age 14, I worked mowing lawns at $20 per lawn, and saved my money to buy a car. My father told me he would pitch in half of the cost of a car when I saved enough money.  Two years later, I found the car I wanted. It was a 1966, 2-door Impala with a 367 in it. I drove the car 3 or 4 times, and the frame snapped. We were novices at such a big repair task, but we began working on it in my Dad’s single garage. We would work on it, and I would have to save up for a certain tool, and we’d work on it more. This went on for a few years. I graduated high school in 1999, I went to college, had a car loan, and made some questionable financial decisions. I got into a car accident and totaled my car. Unfortunately, I had to sell the Impala. I have a pang in my heart each time I see a 1966 Impala because I never got see my car back together again. When I sold it, I sold it in boxes.

BEST AUTOMOTIVE ADVICE

Keep your day job until you’re able to do the magazine full-time.
