I fear as a society that we have become addicted and it’s hurting our relationships, both in our personal lives and in our professional careers. It is making us more weak minded when it comes to remembering and memorizing things as simple as a telephone number. Most importantly science has proved that is harming young children.
The addiction is our smart phones.
Last weekend I attended the Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance. A delightful event, that you should attend, filled with spectacular cars, people, that just celebrated its 46th year. While walking around the grounds of Pacific University, enjoying the cars, I noticed something that happened time and time again when I talked with people. Almost everyone was carrying a smart phone. So was I. Many people were using their phones to take photos, however I experienced something I suspect you have as well. People checking their phones while they were talking to me, and in doing so telling me, “You’re not that important.”
I’m guilty of this too.
I suspect we’ve all experienced this. Here’s a short video that goes more in depth on the subject and has helped me think differently about my phone when engaging with others. Simon Sinek I hope you find it helpful. It will be my goal to make an effort to be more considerate in the future.
