INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

From the late Formula One Champion Aryton Senna –   “The past is just data. I only see the future.”

CAREER & LIFE CHALLENGES

When I decided to resign from Griot’s Garage. I was part of the company for 20+ years as the VP of Marketing, Merchandising, and eventually the President. I truly believed I would finish my years of working there, however things at the company changed and as I learned after reading the book Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson and Ken Blanchard, that when you work for someone, they control the future, and so, I made the difficult choice to leave the company. During that time my father had fallen and broken his neck, my mother in law was diagnosed with cancer and then my wife was diagnosed with a large cell tumor in her leg that resulting in it breaking and she required a very serious surgery. She was unable to walk for months so I was home caring for her and trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life. My son was away at college and came home that summer and during a walk my son said to me, “You’ve been taking me to car shows for years and you love stopping and talking to anyone with a cool car. You should do that!” So, even though I did not know what a podcast was at that point, my son introduced me to them and the rest is history!

PARTING WORDS OF ADVICE

We are living in a time that allows us to start and create a business of your own where you can not only earn a decent living but you can reach out and genuinely contribute to others in a meaningful way. But you have to be willing to work hard, learn new things every day, and give back more than you are willing to receive.

  1. This is WONDERFUL! It is terrific to learn more about you, Mark, and your background and experiences.
You are an inspiration, as are your parents and your wife! (I “married up,” too!) There are so many take-away gems here. Thank you for honoring your listeners and doing this with Mr. Kendall. You two are a great pair!
