Joan Klatil Creamer became General Motors first female ‘Exterior Designer” for Production Cadillac and Advanced Buick after graduating from Cleveland Institute of Art in Industrial Design. Her next career move was with General Electric in Consumer Electronics, Appliances, and Wiring. She then started her own freelance business in product design and earned clients including: Waterford Crystal, Tiffany, and Mikasa, Danbury Mint, Tupperware, and Lenox Collections to name a few. Joan was invited to be a member of the League of Retired Automobile Designers, designing a concept car each year with other designers, just for fun. She’s published, authored and illustrated six children’s books and continues to create fine art paintings and freelance work in automotive design.

  1. I so enjoyed this Podcast on Joan. Such a remarkable lady, showing the drive she had to become one of the best. So impressed with her many achievements.

  2. Listened to the whole interview….Absolutely amazing to learn about Joan Klatil Creamer. Totally thrilled to learn of the mountains and valleys she has had to get through. Thank you for making it a positive adventure for many people to experience.

  3. Great chat with Ms. Creamer. My question is: Now that there are MORE women in Car Design, when might we see a car interior that is designed to fit a woman’s proportions? Women are 51 % of the population, and all automobiles are STILL designed (think: Head rests!) for the larger, taller men! Time for change industry!

  4. Wonderful discussion with Joan. Thanks Mark and Joan for an entertaining few minutes! Looking forward to writing Joan’s article for Audrain in the next few weeks. Joan has been such a wonderful inspiration for so many.
