John Houlihan graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 after earning a degree in Industrial Design and Fine Art. He was hired by GM working under Dave North in the design and development and then later in the Advanced Studios and future concept vehicles Department. He was also involved in design for the ’71 Buick Riviera Boattail and the Chevy Vega. After his time with GM he worked at Smith Corona and General Electric designing products. He also worked at TIMEX in watch design. Later in life John got more into cars, adding a ‘62 Austin Healey BT7 tri-power, then a ‘73 Volvo P1800 ES, and a C7 LT 2.

INSPIRATION

Bernie Smith, a chief designer who was very helpful to John’s career and Gordon Brown who was very helpful with John’s career growth.

CHALLENGE

When he left GM in 1970 concerned that he wanted to have other design opportunities and working in Lubbock TX, neglecting his family and working too much.
