Tyke Durst is an 18-year-old racer who has different plans than most high schoolers. He is training to earn a spot in Formula 4 racing and is driving in the Winter YACademy with Gonella Racing. Formula 4 is a category of open wheel racing that is intended for young drivers as an entry into the world of motorsports. It’s a way to expose young talents as a step up from cart racing. The cars utilize both turbocharged and natural aspirated 4-cylinder engines and produce up to 160 bhp. The cars are capable of reaching speeds of 165 miles per hour. Tyke grew up watching Top Gun that fueled a serious need for speed. On his 18th birthday his parents gave him a birthday gift of a trip to the Skip Barber Racing School in Lime Rock Park. That experience put him on a trajectory to becoming a professional race car driver.
