Pete Biro is a photographer and journalist whose 50 plus year career started when Road & Track magazine asked him to supply them with a story on the Barneson Special, a custom-made sports car. The iconic David E. Davis Jr. discovered Pete’s work and gave him assignments for Car and Driver magazines. Pete and David traveled the world covering races including Le Mans, Grand Prix’s, and most major races and he shot for Sports Illustrated, Time, Life and many others. He met and became friends with many of the great drivers including: Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Bruce Mclaren, Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart, A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty and many others. He worked for Dan Gurney as a public relations guy during the time Bobby Unser won the Indy 500. His latest endeavor is supplying photos for the new book Can-Am 50th Anniversary collaborating with author George Levy. That’s Pete riding along with Jackie Oliver.

  1. I am in need of finding photos of the pace car for the October 29, 1967 Riverside CAN AM race.
The pace car was a 1968 Plymouth GTX HEMI Convertible.
It was a CAR CRAFT Magazine Test Car and was featured in the January 1968 issue of CAR CRAFT as CAR CRAFT Magazine
Road Test car which when brand new was driven from the Jefferson Assembly Plant to Lynwood, California by two young men who belonged to the VON VIRTUES Car Club of Lynwood. They reported on their lengthy road trip on a 4 page spread in this magazine.
This 1968 Plymouth GTX HEMI convertible definitely was the pace car for the October 29, 1967 Riverside CAN AM race as we have seen it at the beginning of a YouTube which shows a recorded playback of the ABC Sports event of this race. Dave Despain does a brief introduction and 2 minutes 14 seconds into the YouTube tape you see the pace car flash by but it is very blurring due to its speed.
You were definitely at this race as you provided photos in Pete Lyons book CAN-AM 50th Anniversary.
The long time owner of this car is a very good friend of mine and I volunteered to try to find still pictures or better videos showing this very unique car. It is part of the car’s provenance.
We are willing to pay you sufficiently for your efforts of looking through your archives to find pictures of this car. You probably have them from the start of this race or static shots near then pits. The car we believe had MOTOR TREND in large black letters on the driver’s door as well as a Yellow Pennzoil oval decal on the left front fender.
If you do not have any please let us know as well.
