You know that dream of finding the car you’ve always wanted? It’s just sitting there in a barn, waiting to be discovered, waiting to be reborn. We all want it. Numerous books have been published about barn finds, taking that tired old creation and bringing it back to life. Wouldn’t you enjoy making it work again so that it brings joy, and passion, and happiness back in to your life?
Have you ever thought of yourself as a barn find?
Right now, more than any moment in our lifetime, there are opportunities to be entrepreneurial. But you’re too old, right? Many 52 to 80 years olds, in business, and in life, feel like they have been left behind. Millennials are not the only group entitled to the future.
Your opportunity to get out of the barn is real.
If you’re over 50, you have decades of business and life experiences, far beyond anyone who’s 20 to 40. Too often I hear, “I don’t “get” the computer, the apps, the software, the smart phone.” Stop with the excuses. Deploy your knowledge. Grab a piece of the pie. You learned how to drive. You can learn how to download Instagram.
You have decades left of your life and to do what you love.
The market will accept you and your ideas. It will acknowledge your talents. You must be willing to learn. Learn like you did in your 20s, 30s, and 40s. It’s because of your smart phone, your tablet, and your laptop, that you can share and sell your new products, services, and ideas with the world.
You have as much viability as anyone. You can do this.
Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Turn off the TV. Discover your passion and create something. Don’t be that person, sitting in a barn when you’re 90, saying “I wish I had…”
These are Great words of wisdom. At 68 I am working full time and love it. It is nice because I can cut back any time I wish but still need the income to survive let alone try to plan for non working years. The fact is that I have learned much of today’s technology and continue to be amazed. If something seems out of my capacity I let someone else take care of it. The bottom line is that I see folks my age that have “retired” and stopped producing and they seem to age much faster. Those that stay active, mentally and physically, definitely live healthier, happier lives. Thanks for these encouraging words Mark 🙂
Thank you Tom for your words of wisdom. Keep the pedal to the metal.
Hi Mark. Good article. Life is about experiences, learning and memories. However, I would prefer to think of myself as a preservation car rather than a barn find. : )
Haha Ed! You’re definitely a preservation classic!
Once again, Mark, you have hit the nail directly on the head as I watch you continue to inspire others in your unique and personal way. KUDOS to you, sir!
Thank you David for your kind words and support. We’re all old car nuts!
Great article Mark. It really hits home with great words of encouragement for those of us looking for a change of career mid-life! This old “barn find” still has a lot of mileage left in it. Looking forward to exploring new things down the road, with the encouragement of great friends like you buddy. Thanks for you insight and wisdom that comes from your own life journey beyond the “barn” !
I appreciate your kinds words, support and friendship Tim!
I’m with my old friend, Ed….would prefer to think of myself as preserved rather than waiting to be found in an old barn. Love your missives, and like you I’m having the time of my life on my new career. After retiring from Xerox about ten years ago at age 65, I’ve filled the past ten “retirement years” turning my lifelong avocation–love of cars–into a new vocation (writing about and consulting with others who can use my years–ahem–of experience). It’s been such a treat to watch you develop “Cars Yeah” into this brilliant website. You practice what you preach, m’lad…
Thank you very much for your kind words Diane. I couldn’t be doing this without the support of my automotive friends!
